Halloween Is Coming
At three, my little one is getting hip to Halloween. Last year my mom and I took her trick-or-treating. She was dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (she had no idea who Dorothy was, but I dug it). This is Viv in her costume when she was one. It cost $40, so I had her wear it for two years running. I was a doctor. When we went trick-or-treating, Vivien often tried to give the candy back to the people who gave it to her. It was so cute.
This year she is noticing other people's decorations and she wanted to get in on the fun. So we went shopping today for Halloween decorations, at a party supply store. My gal is a bit sensitive, so everything was deemed "too scary, Mama" as we walked the aisles.
"Well, Halloween is supposed to be scary, but in a tongue-in-cheek way." Surprisingly a three-year-old didn't understand that. (She no more understood it when later in the afternoon she was fighting me on her nap, and I told her she was being contrary. She stopped wailing, "I don't know what contrary means!")
I found a tissue-paper pumpkin but that was rejected as well. Finally she agreed to some smiling pumpkins and a "happy" cardboard ghost.
It did make me think. Halloween is kind of weird.

wow. look how much her hair grew in a year!
oh, wait, was that shallow?
that was two years ago! I couldn't find a picture of last Halloween
Hey be happy she's scared of the monsters. My 3 year old demanded that I buy him the Scream ghost costume, but not just any one, the one that actually bleeds. (Quite a stretch from last year's Thomas the Train costume.) Needless to say that doesn't come in a 3 year old size. But you should have seen the way people at Target were looking at me when he told them he was gonna be "blood guy". Like as if he has seen any of the Scream movies or anything. He saw the costume at the store and thought it was spooky. Anyway he decided daddy could be "blood guy" and he would be Iron Man.
Cecilia is spooked out by most things.. we decorated with a happy pumpkin and a happy pumpkins sign and a happy pumpkin door cover.. we're the happiest decorated house on the street.
We had her 2nd birthday western themed.. so she has these ungodly high priced Justin Roper boots .. so my husband said I had to incorporate them in some kind of costume. So we'll see.
Isn't Viv adorable in the Dorothy costume. Love it. Maybe I'll bedazzle the red boots and she can be Dorothy… haha
Still awake and looking through old posts. Jake just turned 4 this fall and Cruz is 10 months old. I figure I only have the first 4 halloweens to choose what they wear before they start caving in to peer pressure. Si I decided to maximize those years by picking costumes that amuse me and will embarrass them later-
Jake, year 1- a mushroom, year 2 we skipped because of illness, year 3- a yard gnome, year 4- a UPS man.
Costume ideas on the horizon- Organgrinder monkey/bellhop (if it's cold, the monkey suit goes on under the bellhop outfit for a layerd look, heh). Me as Cruella De Ville and the boys as dalmations, the shower costume like Karate Kid, and more ideas are floating around in here!
