I think that Oprah was the right person at the right time--she was on the forefront of all TV talk shows. I lived in Illinois in 1985 when she went national. We had watched her on local TV and were delighted when she succeeded. I have also enjoyed watching her figure out how to succeed on her own terms. So, she hires her best friend as a stunt-Oprah when the actual one is unavailable--you can bet I would hire my best friend, for better or worse, too. Remember when her show got all Jerry Springer, and she decided to pull it back a bit? It, to me, reflected where I was, as well--Jerry Springer was a novelty--a car wreck you could not take your eyes off of--but then it became sickening. I appreciate Oprah's kind of matching the temperature of society. At the same time, I am colossally turned off by Oprah University or whatever it is--with Eckhart Tolle. I appreciated her getting average people reading again, but she can also be a little self-important. Do I want to be in the audience for Oprah's favorite things? Hells yeah. Am I wearing a WWOD bracelet? Nope.

I think Heather has a point......the people who get overly butt-hurt about her are probably republicans...oh, oops...let that slip....no, but I do believe it says more about them than her. I'm not a Oprah stalker, but I do appreciate good intentions and TRYING not to impose an ego trip on people. (have you seen Tyra Banks show?)

Plus, how can you fault someone who is trying to change the world from the ground up through an academy for girls......it dawned on me recently during a conversation that educating women, especially in that area of the world, is quite brilliant. Men have always horded their knowledge. Women know how to share it, and really what can change that part of the world most?

Now I'm off to my Oprah book club, where we will burn our bras, cause they dont fit, and drink whatever concoction she tells us to.....

I think she has become totally overrated and her word has become next to Goddess-like. I guess it says it all that I don't watch her but whateva's to those who do. I do believe she acts in good faith and has done a world of good to many people. I just can't take an hour of her.

I think there's an awful lot of people in this country who, for many different reasons, chose not to think for themselves. (I mean, hey, Dubya for 2 terms... Really?) Oprah provides an opinion for them, a standard to aspire to.

I don't blame her. She's smart, she's got a lot to say and she works very hard for all that. And there's tons of people who watch on entertainment (or as Heather mentions, inspiration) alone.

I just happen to believe that the larger portion of her audience are absolute sheep and she knows it.

No harm, no foul. Someone's gotta lead 'em.

Oprah? Don't care about her. I have watched (part of) her show twice in my 38 years.

I can't say anything bad about her, though. Like any of us, she uses her sphere of influence, small or large, to promote change in ways she think best. Given the chance to be so influencial, would i do the same? Probably.

I think she tries to do what she thinks is good. She makes mistakes, but we all do.

Like all celebrities, I think she gets more attention than deserved, but then, I really do NOT get into the whole 'celebrity watch' thing. I have my own life to live, my own opinions to form, my own books to read, and my own weight to watch without worrying about Oprah, or anyone else outside MY sphere of influence.

Oprah? I can take her or leave her. She's really not a part of my daily life.

ooo interesting!

there's really nothing better on a sick day than sweats + tub of fatty snacks + oprah. and you just can't hate on a woman who gives so much/has overcome so much.

but

i do kind of go 'eh' on two things oprah related:

a) when an entire show is dedicated to a bland a-list celebrity talking about bland a-list things. yawn.

b) when one of my already-favorite books gets a big 'oprah's book club' sticker smacked on it. super irrational of me, but it just bugs.
