Mom's Eroding Self-Esteem

Comments (12) Share

Sometimes I interview celebrity moms when they are guests on my TV show "The Fashion Team" on the TV Guide Channel (which, by the way, one needs a divining rod, crystals and  jumper cables to figure out when it comes on as it airs now ever other week… usually… on Sunday and Monday nights… mostly). I love the gals I interview, or I wouldn't ask them to do a bit for Cool Mom. If someone wasn't fun, I would just skip it. I often ask them about beauty on the go. Or how can us moms not look and feel like crap. Now, I know if I haven't gotten enough sleep, which I haven't for almost every day for nearly 7 months now, no amount of spit and polish will make me feel like I look good.

And when I haven't slept, I usually want to snack on carbs, which makes me feel fat, and I probably don't have time to exercise, which can make me feel a tad better about Team Daphne.

But, sometimes, I do think, "Hey, I look pretty good." My husband tells me I look nice when I'm naked. (He did recently have eye surgery so let's take that with a grain of salt.) And then of course there is the unconditional love given to me by my adorable little kids. Kids love doesn't see whether their mom is Heidi Klum or Doris behind the wheel of a Honda Odyssey whose pants are about to split. They just see their moms in a shining light. Right?

The world is kinder to a well groomed person, that's for sure.

It only takes a few extra minutes to "clean up good", and it makes all the difference in the world with service at Dr's offices, ED's, banks, stores, kids schools, etc.

Just clean, pressed clothes, combed hair and lipstick gives the illusion that you haven't been let out of the loony bin for the day.

Both my girls eradicate any appearance-based self doubting… bless 'em!

Whenever I know I'm looking rougher than usual, they're always there to say things like "We like your beard" or "You don't look horrible Daddy".

That's when I remember that such unconditional acceptance will never be as widespread as should be, thanks to society and its narrow-minded perception.

Books and covers… that's what I often whisper as I wink to my gals, before hitting the street and going out into reality!

    Nanas's Eroding Self-Esteem

One day we were picking my 90 year-old grandmother up for church. My daughter Ava asked her if she was ready to go.

"Almost," she said. "I just need to put a little make-up on."

"Oh Nana!" said Ava. "You don't need make-up. You're old!"

I've been feeling like a total hag lately. I think being sleep deprived for so long has aged me at least 5 years. A couple of weeks ago I went to the salon and asked for something short and sassy. I figured I needed a new look but it back fired completely because now I look like Haley Mills in the Parent Trap when she goes to camp and wacks her hair off. Ugh.

I miss your more rambling posts! I know the short and sweet video blogs are more media friendly but I loved, loved, loved your longer posts.

Toss a few back in for us!

Daphne, one thing I forgot to mention in my comment yesterday is that you really shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Knowing what I know from reading your blog tells me that you're juggling a TON…TV job, "wifeager", sleep deprived mom of 2, breastfeeding & pumping, blogger, adjusting to new life circumstances… I think you should give yourself a bit of a break, remind yourself that you're a bad ass and look for those opportunities to do the things that make you feel strong, confident and happy. Rock on mama!

oh Amy, how sweet you are. Well I am trying to go play nine holes this morning with a gal, but almost didn't happen since Vivien had a pre school meltdown.
and the Hayley Mills line is great. Know exactly what that looks like. I don't trust most hair cutters.

"the world is kinder to a well groomed person" is a great line. One to remember.

Trisha, I'm sure there will be rambling ones. sometimes I only have a few beats –as we say in comedy. :)

I almost never wear makeup. NOT because I think I look good without it, but because I prefer to sleep just a little bit longer in the morning.

Moanna (2 years old), gets super excited when I do put on make up and thinks it's time to play dress up and I have to dust her off with the blush brush.

hey, random question.. i've been watching you forever, and i was wondering who films your clips on here? just a curiosity question. thanks daphne! have a great week!

Daphne Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

yeah, not wanting your little girls to get into make up is a whole other topic!
sara, sometimes I do ones myself with a tripod, that's how I do the momversations. But, I also hire a camera guy who comes to my house and we do several in a half day. then edit them and string them out over a few weeks. It's the cheapest way to do it and have it look kind of good.

Nothing like the unconditional love of a child……and their wonderful honesty!

    You look good to us!

That is so cute, and I love the child like simplicity in which she see's it. So many women it seems feel like they "have to" put on makeup or do their hair, when in all actuality its more for them to feel pretty and confident than for everyone else.
