Are Little Girls Dressing Too Sexy?
Share
I'd love to write a better intro, but Vivien is hanging on me, and I have to put her to bed. I brought a little sass to this Momversation. Need to vary it a bit!
Do you think that young girls are dressed too sexy?

We've been very vigilant about this from the get-go. We've had a firm policy against "sass" clothes, as well — the ones that say "I'm the kid and I'm in charge", or "It's all about me", etc. The type of message conveyed by those seemingly benign t-shirts is what can easily feed into the sexy clothes phenomenon. We are the parents and *we* are the ones who make the decisions until they have the maturity and reasoning to do so.
Oh, Daphne….you crack me up. I wish I lived there….
Seriously: as the mom of 3 boys, I know how hard it is for my 13 and 14 yr old guys to concentrate in church when the pew in front of us is lined up with jean miniskirts that look more like belts than skirts. Oh,yeah, then throw in no stockings on smooth, shaved, taut 15 yr old thighs….my poor guys.
Ha ha Daphne, you are hilarious!
I totally agree with what everyone is saying. I dont dress my 4 year old daughter in anything that is made for anyone else than a 4 year old. No short skirts that dont come with leggings, no tight tops and NO tops that are V-cut. have you seen those????? It's ridicules!
I'm sure EVERY generation has said the younger one is dressing too sexy or listening to horrible music or whatever….but as a mother of a 6 year old it is SO hard to find regular clothes for her to play and go to school in.
I don't want a mini-skirt or short shorts or a low cut top. I don't want a shirt plastered with Hanna Montana or iCarly. (Nothing against them they are great I just don't like character clothes). I just want her to have a normal shirt and pair of shorts. It's so hard to find!!
My daughters are 12 now. While they have their allowance $ to buy clothes they have to pass the MOM approval. And will for some time
Or the allowance stops.
Too funny Daphne!
I really don't have a problem with finding appropriate clothes for my 3 year old… I guess when they get a little older, like tweens is when the trouble begins.
I own a little girls store and we have been in business for 57 years. I totally agree that clothes are way too sexy and I don't carry things that make little girls look like they belong on the street. My point has always been , that if mothers would stop buying these looks, manufacturers would stop making them. You have no idea, however, how many moms with 5 year olds say " oh, that's too juvenile for her". They need to get a grip and let them be young for as long as possible. They really want to be friends and sisters, not moms.
scary Luan. If I had my way my daughter would always be dressed like Caroline Kennedy was as a child in the White house. OF course, if i had my way I 'd always be dressed like Jackie of the same era.. and have her figure.
Oh, just went to your site. Fab. That's what I'm talking about!
1) Daphne = Hilarious!
2) LOVE the little girl picking her nose in the beginning of the video!
3) I've seen SOME inappropriate little girl clothing out there, but honestly, where are people shopping that carries clothes like that? I don't even think I saw anything "trampy" when I took my 5 year old school shopping for kindergarten this year!
4) On that note, I kinda have one foot on each side of the line on this issue; I don't dress my girls "trampy" (On Purpose), but I don't have a problem with a halter dress or shirt on occasion, or the sweatpants with words on the butt (wish *I* could get away with it!), as long as the words aren't provocative - and I don't consider "cute" provocative, nor "princess" (especially on a licensed princess outfit). Now if it said "Naughty"? Not happening!
5) BUT, I also have a VERY TINY 3 year old, and a 5 year old that WAS tiny at that age (but is now quite average), and sometimes, the only pair of shorts I can find that won't literally fall off her tiny waist is a size 12 or 18 months. Which then shifts it into the "short-shorts" category, but I figure that's better than her running around in nothing but panties out in public, because 2 & 3T's would completely fall off! Dresses and skirts are easier, since I can slip leggings, shorts or tights under them (and Daddy insists on shorts, at a minimum), but I'm all for the tunic/dress, too (only not without bottoms - I'm not THAT "trampy")!
We had a 12-year-old "naughty" nurse come to our house for candy, complete with fishnets, a red bra and 4-inch heels. Enough said (and now I feel like my grandmother).
I would not buy anything like that, but it is amazing the sassy behaviour they pick up from older girls and TV even without the clothes. I would love to ask moms who let young girls dress this way — what are you hoping to accomplish? Why do we need to objectify children? How will this help them become the adults we hope them to be?
p.s. Great outfit Daphne!
