I remember being a child and hearing something awful on the news. As I cowered behind a chair I wondered how the news people could talk about such horrible things night after night. I imagined it to be among the worst jobs in the world. I was probably around 8 and not used to seeing the news in my family home. It was frightening.

Fast forward and we do not watch the news when the kids are around, or indeed ever. I get my world news online in private.

My kids are son 16, and twin daughters 12. I mentioned the massive earth quake to them and apparently all learned about it at school. We made our family donation (and the girls baked tonight for a benefit bake sale). My kids know that we give when we can to such awful events and are proud sponsors to a foster child in Indonesia.

I personally hate the news as it is so peppered with negativity and doom.. Only watch the Canadian channels as they seem to have a more positive spin on things and are more open and honest. But again, only online. CBC news is my friend every morning.

I figure my kids can wait until they are older and more mature until they watch the news in all it's negativity.
