Really, this is suppose to be a video driven site, but gosh, still having some technical issues. They are coming…I hope. In the meantime, let’s talk about my fiesty gal.
Vivien is a nice girl, but like all kids she can have her moments. She is very sweet to her little brother, most of the time. But, when her beloved older cousin Charlie comes over she doesn’t want to share him with Rex. At 12 Charlie is a sport about playing a 4 and half year old. They had started a game of pirate ship using her pop up princess castle when Rex crawled in. He loves being where Vivien is and loves climbing in and out of the castle. But, shiver me timbers, Vivien ejected Rex from the castle like he was a drunk hanging out after last call.
For her friends’ party this weekend for the time EVER she asked to have her hair put in pony tails. I was so excited and she looked so cute. I had visions of cute little girl dos.
But, as we were getting the two of them ready for bed last night Vivien was left alone in her bathroom for a few minutes. I saw a chunk of her hair on the floor.
“Vivien, what have you done?”
“nothing” she looked scared.
“Where are the scissors?”
“no where.”
I opened the drawer to the vanity. Little did I know she had smuggled in a small pair of scissors. I ran my fingers through her hair and more chunks came out.
“oh, Vivien”. I didn’t handle it with good humor. More like, “oh,no, your pretty hair!”
She started to cry and Mark ran in and kept saying, “it’s fine, it’s fine” as I commanded him to put all scissors to higher ground.
He admonished me later that I made to much of it.
This morning I see that she kind of has a shag….sort of. Maybe if I leave the scissors out she can finish it off and have a full Suzi Quatro look.

Aye aye aye. For what it’s worth, the pigtails *were* incredibly cute that day. They let us see her face a little more clearly — which was quite complimentary!
Wait, there’s a before picture, but no after???
I know you were traumatized and all, but you really need to document this. If not for your loyal readers, for posterity and blackmail potential…
My cousin did this same thing to her lovely strawberry blond, curly locks at about the age of 3. My aunt says they never found the scissors that my uncle threw out the door after he came home and saw the result. I love that story.
Chin up, Daphne. It’ll grow back. And she’s still lovely, even if she does end up looking like a very young rock star.
Oh, my little Ava did the same thing when she was five. She cut all of her shoulder length curls off into a bob and gave herself bangs. When I walked into the bathroom I freaked out and started crying and then she cried. My husband was like “Calm down, you’re making too much of it.” But I just felt so much identity with her beautiful hair.
The next day I took her to a salon to get it trimmed and evened up. The stylist asked if I had attempted to even it up myself the night before. I hadn’t. She then showed me the cuts–they were dead straight. She said it was the best self-haircut she’d ever seen. And her bangs were the perfect length too.
I’ll admit she looked pretty cute with her new ‘do, but Oh those curls!
@BeingSuper
I think that the self-haircut is a right of passage for kids. I did it. My brother cut his quite spectacularly right before a big vacation. My nieces and nephews have all cut themselves lovely and dramatic hairdos. I am just waiting for my son to get old enough to give it a go. Thankfully it grows back and as long as it is only hair and no blood is spilled it isn’t the worst thing in the world. I agree with the other comments that a after picture is in order.
My 6 year old and I have had the talk about scissors & hair. So far, we’re in the clear.
Jean, you are right, will try to get a pic.
my elder daughter, now 10, chopped at her hair when she was near viv’s age (iirc). she did it right off the front, and then denied denied denied as i was holding the shortened piece in my hand! she was going for bangs, she said. i told her she just had to ask for them and i’d have gotten them cut properly. scissors were on restriction for a long time after that.
i think chopping one’s hair is a pretty standard kid thing. i did it when i was a kid.
Ah the age of discover and deny. Both my boy and girl cut their own hair between ages 3 and 5 and denied it adamantly. Last week my almost five year old found a diaper used for her dolls, put it on and peed in it, of course she put it on wrong so she peed all over her sweatpants. All evidence was hidden until I sniffed it out in her room a day later. Then with evidence in hand I asked her about it – DENY DENY DENY. It is both funny and annoying.
yes, it is. at least it grows back. I chopped off a lot of barbie’s hair before I realized it wasn’t coming back.
