Ever noticed how some childhood traditions actually fly in the face of what you were trying to teach your kids? Like the mix of “you are so wonderful” is followed later by, “don’t have a sense of entitlement.”
Well, how about this old chestnut of birthday parties for the mixed message award?
Look lady…YOU might tell your kid not to be violent…but some of us are rather proud of our violent tots. :p
why do americans do pinatas anyway? I don’t get that….
BTW, love your imitation of grabbing for the candyon the ground. And it’s not even good stuff. it’s all old icky hard candy…
yes! my daughter goes for it, but have one she leaves it rotting in my car, when I forget to hide it. um, i look really crazy and haggy in this vid. wow
HAHAHA
What about the “smash cake” at one year old parties???? For months we put a bib on the baby, tell them not to touch the bowl or the spoon b/c mommy’s doing the feeding, we have a stack of baby wipes next to the high chair…and then the one year birthday comes and we ACTUALLY tell the kid, “It’s ok!!! Get all messy!!! It’s fun!!!”
I have a video of my daughter with the most hilariously confused face EVER at her one year old b-day party when I told her that it was ok to rub all that buttercream in her face!!! LOL
Daph, daph, daph — HILARIOUS. Yes, you look crazy, but that’s WHY IT”S HILARIOUS. One of my favorite posts in a while (dark toast was pretty brilliant too…I can totally relate to the mommy tantrum)
I hate pinatas for the crazy post-candy drop atmosphere that ensues — my daughter gets really overwhelmed by that kind of closeness/crowding, and I always have to rescue her from the “scrum” (perfect word) and, oh yes, at the same time make sure that she gets some candy — not much different from the Easter egg hunt that she can’t stand having to race to go find eggs for…she gets paralyzed by the idea that she’s MISSING EVERYTHING but she doesn’t really want to go throw elbows to get any.
Maybe that means she’s not destined for competitive greatness, but I like to think it means she is compassionate, empathetic, “sensitive.”
World still needs some of those folk, I think…..
I love this one – and couldn’t agree any more!
Totally with you on the pinata thing. Whatever happened to the gentle, sugar-free games, like “Pin The Tail On The Donkey”?
Luckily my kids are teens now. I’m releived of pinata pressure. Now we just play, “Hide The Alcohol.”
OMG i love pinata’s but totally agree. And i can’t stop laughing at this video. I picked up this blog from the 8th continent soy milk post on facebook. And i literally have tears rolling down my face. I am so watching more videos!!! thanks for todays hearty laugh boy did i need it.
I didn’t know I was on the some soy milk thing, but that’s cool. Thanks for coming.
Jessica, hide the alcohol. funny. sure to be a future post!
Lisa, yes, we try to figure out who are kids will be out of every little thing.
