How to Relate to a Stepchild

Comments (3) Share

When I tell people I have two little kids and a 16 year old stepson (I don't lead with my two older stepkids as they live on their own), I get remarks about "what a handful" the stepson must be.  Not the case.  Oliver wouldn't know drama if it slapped him in the face and set it's hair on fire in front of him.  He would barely raise his eyebrows.

He is very cool.

He talked more to me when he was little.  Now, I welcome any dialogue.  No matter how I have to get it.

Great post! I have two step-kids. A 17-year old girl and a 12 year old boy and your video pretty much sums up our relationship as well. It's kind of funny, but a little sad too. I miss when they were younger and needed me more, but am happy for the little bits I do get. Even if it is just writing checks and driving them places…it still counts. Right?

Oh yes the quiet takes some getting used to. A handful of sentences is all I get most days from my 15yro son. But like your Oliver, he's fairly drama free, gets along with his 13yro brother. I guess I should count myself lucky. Are teen girls different than boys? Is there more drama and angst? Or is that just bunk made up by folks writing articles?
