Since web traffic is a trickle the last two weeks of the year, I’ve been largely offline. But, back to the chain gang. Otherwise known as having to get my daughter to school on time. And dressed. With a lunch. With a book bag. Sigh.
As people muse about resolutions for this fab New Year I have one to add to the usual, don’t stuff myself with baked goods, workout everyday, read a book with more substance than People Magazine… I have one more aspiration of late: Raise My kids to be Chinese.
Hear me out. Granted it’s not just the old immigrants work harder deal. Did you watch the Summer Olympics opening ceremony? They made it very clear they are taking over the world. So literally it’s good to bone up on your Mandarian. But, metaphorically there are some other lessons to be gleaned here. Look at this. That’s right, I’m not the only one who thought about this. Persistence and discipline can trump IQ.
Just without that pesky Communism.
(Note: Cameo by wonderful cameraman and good sport Chun Ming Huang. Though why he doesn’t have clips of the Cool Mom’s he has shot. I don’t know. )
Hi Daphne… Oh how you make me laugh!!! I love Rex’s face in some of these shots. He’s so beautiful!!!
Ok.. my comment: So I did grow up in America via immigrant parents and was propelled to always be the best.. at EVERY.SINGLE.STUPID.THING. I’m not a doctor or lawyer. There’s this thing about perfection. It’s always expected. After you get those first straight A’s, you HAVE TO GET THEM EVERY SINGLE SEMESTER OR ELSE. I rebelled. After I stopped getting noticed and praise for good grades, I started to smoke, experiment with boys, had no motivation for school but still loved to read and loved to learn. I had great great intentions throughout high school. Always had some silly plan to re-read this book, write this essay, really battle through Calculus but never could find the thing in me that made me do it. As an only child I didn’t have much competition and not a lot of friends so there was no real person to BEAT.. I guess. I don’t know. I still consider myself successful. I work in a super industry and have a beautiful 10 month old son.. however I don’t really have much of a relationship with my family. No call on Christmas, no birthday cards, no well wishes for the New Year. It’s best this way.. really. My son won’t ever know the sting of disappointing someone for just being normal, for just being himself. For that.. I’m ever so grateful. I can’t remember the point of this comment. Forgive my babbling.. I got mad issues to work out.. yo.

There’s definitely something to be said about questioning traditional American values. My husband has to relate to college students as part of his job, and so many of them have been catered to and picked up after for their entire lives, that they can’t maintain a home or take care of themselves.
and they show up late to class but with a cup of coffee, right?
This is a charming vlog. Could you interview Chun Ming
again? He is so handsome, Rex is adorable and you are
hilarious.
Chung MIng is too cute.
This post gives me chuckles as most of my friends are Asian. I have known my BFF and her family for over 10 years. Her mom came here from China 40 years ago and they were poor. The family worked their butts off over the years and built a little empire. I used to make fun of how everthing was so calculated. Any purchase that was made had to have some way of producing income all the way down to buying a family dog.
I dont laugh anymore as they are the only family I know who is not hurting during this time. My BFFs mom is a realtor and when purchasing my home she wouldnt let me buy the one I wanted she said that I was going for looks and not money that will help me in the long run.
You are onto something with this video post. The Chinese culture is not perfect as I see how the push for a high income life has affected my friend in someways but she will always be able to pay her bills.
I started Chinese lessons this week actually and will be teaching the kids. China already controls all the products that we buy so my husband and I figure we better be able to communicate because who knows what will happen in the future. They could end up the new world leader.
