Tangles

The combing the hair thing in the morning is so much drama.  I know how much it hurts.  When I was 8 my mom could only hold me down once a week and by that time I looked like Cousin It.  I have to make sure Vivien’s hair is sort of an order as she know has to wear it in pig tails ( or braids, but for some reason she hates braids) because there is a lice outbreak at her school.  Ha, good times. cheers

I spray the stuff on her head, use a wide tooth comb, go in small batches.  I sometimes worry I’m torturing her like that Toddlers and Tiara mom who waxes her kids eyebrows.  Everyday there are snarls.  Conditioning the hair the night before helps, but only a bit, and since she is getting over an ear infection I’ve let the hair washing go for a few days ( also supposedly lice loves clean hair)

Any suggestions or helpful hints for this issue are appreciated.

Should I just go for dreds?

  1. My 4yr old swears by the “magic brush.” We got it sent to us free in some online sweepstakes. Funny enough, when I mentioned it on facebook all of the moms of girls in my group agreed it is a lifesaver – we all got it free from the same link :) . I guess it’s got some sort of comfort cushion or something. All I know is my daughter (who now wants her just past shoulder length hair as long as Rapunzel) will scream and cry if she even sees me holding another brush.

I tracked it down a few months back to add to my amazon cart for the eventual day when the brush goes missing. And yes we have been known to skip a day of brushing for a messy pony if magic brush is MIA.

Have you tried washing and braiding into pony tails at night? It makes for a quick easy brush through and rebraid in the morning.

  2. Posts like these make me thank God Almighty that I have two boys…although, I confess, my oldest boy has hair as long as a girl right now. Power struggles are not part of my mommy repertoire.

  3. I can only relate, and I hate that our brush is something to be feared and negotiated with. My 4 year old will let me spray, but is only agreeable when I let her brush it herself. She does a pretty good job of making it look smoothed out, and suddenly the rats nest has been replaced by her natural waves and curls. Each time I’m amazed by the transformation.

  4. we swear by No More Tangles leave in Conditioner. Not the one that you spray in. That one does not work that well. The one that comes in a tube and you work it in with your hands after washing the hair. After we used that, we never have any problem brushing the hair. My 5 year old brushed her own hair everyday and there is no fussing.

  5. i wish i had advice for you. i hear “it huuuuuuuurts” and “be geeeentle” while the tears come streaming from my 3 1/2 year old’s face daily. i suppose “being beautiful hurts” isn’t the best response… ;)

  6. no, I guess not.

okay, no more tangles in tube and “magic brush”. She is strangely adverse to braids. Maybe I need to get her obsessed with Laura Ingalls books like I was.

  7. my eldest desperately wanted to have LONG hair, which gave me excellent leverage for brushing her hair. it was simple, either it was brushed or i was going to cut it off. of course, i didn’t WANT to cut it off, but the threat worked and i think she was doing it on her own by age 5.

  8. We would love Vivien to have a bob, she one at 3 and a half and it was adorable! Took Becky K’s advice and got the no more tangles leave in. it really helped. Although, not when Mark did it, so we think he didn’t put in enough. Still , thanks for that.
