Raising Boys

This one is a little longer, but has a great payoff.  I was moved to smiles and laughter by an essay on Babble by Thomas Matlack. The full article is here. It was a piece by a dad, telling a mom about raising boys.  I know a lot more about girls, being one, so I was all ears.

So, here is me reading some highlights with Rex and, of course, giving my take on it.

See if you agree or disagree.

  1. I came running over when I saw, “raising boys.”

Now, I will go read the essay, after I watch this.

After being the mother of 3 boys, I think I can have my opinion, don’t you?

Can’t wait to watch this clip..

  2. Hey Daphne, thanks for sharing the article. I would love to talk to you more about this and potentially work together on a dad vs. mom perspective piece. You can email me at thomasmatlack at gmail and we can take it from there if you’re interested.

  3. I think when you feed boys with sensitivity they feel affirmed. I have one son who’s a little more independent and stand-offish by nature, but kind and very high verbal. I’m sure Alexandra would agree that all boys are unique and different. Somehow I don’t think that pooping is at the center of either of my boys’ universes…though it’s nice to hear that they do enjoy it.

  4. I love my boy, he is so straighforward and easy to understand. I love my girl, she is so nuanced and complicated. The “variety pack” surely makes my life interesting.

  5. So great – love the interaction at the end. Of course, my favorite part is that, during a piece focused on MALE (pounding figurative chest gorilla style now) traits, Rexie is sitting there happily playing with a pink butterfly. LOVE that.

  6. CUTE CUTE!!! Remember the Gilmore Girls’ episode where Rory is finally at her college and she calls her mom to come stay with her? AND Lorelei DOES! And it’s… AWESOME. and sweet and heart-warming.. and one of those moments where I say, “That’s the kinda mom I’m gonna be..” … But I have a boy.
