Oh, poor Daphne, she is suffering from Hickory Hill-itis. No, dear, you are not a Kennedy.
Yes, I watched a lot of British dramas growing up and love biographies; so, bear with me. Without seeing or feeling the vibe of my home, I’m asking for help to name my new abode.
My hope is we stay here a long time. So long that when my kids have grown they write letters to their friends saying that they are going home to “Juniper Hollow” or whatever the name is.
I know, who writes letters?
Or maybe it’s that we have moved so often in the last few years I crave permanence, so much that I want to have an instant institution. Something that means something and that stands the test of time.
Brogacropolis?
Of the three, I like Sycamore Hill the best.
I have also always liked the idea of living in a house that was like a manor, so you could call it Sycamore Manor or Palms Manor (leave off the 13). Then when you refer to it years down the road, you can just shorten it to “The Manor”.
Just a thought.
Having watched coolmom for a few years now and getting to know some of the back story as to why you have your new house, I would suggest : Hope Manor or Esperanza – (spanish for hope, being in CA and all). It could hold several meanings, overall showing how you took a negative turn of events and have created hope and happiness for you and your family in your new home. You can even shorten it to “The Manor” too.
I love these ideas. Esperanza manor?
I like 13 Palms because it makes such simple sense. Of course I’m always biased towards child-like logic.
My family already made some of the kookier suggestions, but Fiona would like to resubmit Rancho de las Rosas, which is from a young adult novel called Esperanza Rising. I vote for that, or 13 Palms, which your family likes. They’re the ones you really have to listen to, since the usage of the name will depend on their cooperation! Our house was briefly called The Palms Plantation. It didn’t stick. Good luck with your quest!
For your house:
The LAUGHTER House
’nuff said.
I’ve been trying to name my house for awhile myself..
- Sahsha’s Manor (or puppy)
- MeirKat Manor (Sahsha looks like a MeerKat and my husband thought that show was hilarious)
- Lorelai – I’m a Gilmore Girls fanatic.
- Sweetwater Tavern (I just like that name.. I think it’s restaurant in Virginia)
- Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls reference)
Most days it’s:
House of Pain. (not all days.. mostly these days..)
Clutterbug Central
Modge Podge Station
Hope Plaza
I’d love to come home to a peaceful serene escape.. jazz music playing the background, some beautiful aroma of cooking and everyone including the dog run up and give me a great big hug and take my coat, purse and shoes and put them in the appropriate place..
Right now, it’s just a crazy grand central station with TV blaring, something’s burned in the oven and dog jumping up on me tearing up my legs and just dump my stuff and move on to the next crisis.
Someday I’ll have peace. Someday the house will immaculate and beautiful again. Someday I’ll sit on the porch and enjoy my tea on a lazy summer night. That someday will come and I’ll be all alone hurting for the pitter patter of little feet and chaos all around me…….
Sorry for the rambling…
Hi there,
I have always loved a certain house in my area which is called Fáilte (Fàilte and Failt is a word meaning “welcome”. This word appears in the Irish phrase céad míle fáilte (a hundred thousand welcomes) wIkepedia
Do you have any Irish blood at all?
Our house is called Yewtrees it only has one Yewtree at the front so perhaps Palmtrees (alloneword) the number 13 may cause chaos for the postal system.
Love reading your blog
Kind regards
Chris

From the list I like Sycamore Hill.
I love the idea of naming a house. A friend of mine growing up named their cars.
You have inspired me to pitch the idea to the fam
Soooooooooo… what did you decide?
I like that Failt idea. I do have Irish blood .
maybe could the houses motto?
well, today I’m leaning towards 13 palms. It bugs me when my husband makes Marine references ( 29 palms).
I have to show him all these comments.
thanks!!
Calypso, I say go for your aspirational for your house. in the meantime it can be ironic
well I’m way late to the voting session, but I’m in favor of 13 Palms.
What did you settle on?
