PP (Pre-Parenthood) this is one of the topics that would NOT have occurred to me have, but now is a regular thing among moms to chat about … besides how we never get together and why don’t we see our friends anymore.
UPDATE: Just in! useful information on this subject has just arrived from Adie Horowitz, owner, Licenders, (maybe she is the lice lady)
Here are here tips for lice prevention.
- Know the “lice” time of year
- Winter: Travel time, clothing layers, hats, gloves, scarves, etc.
- Summer: Camp, play dates, travel, hats, road trips
- Prevention products: peppermint is a deterrent scent to the bug, many shampoos/conditioners contain this ingredient
- Once per week throw backpacks, hats and jackets in the dryer for 20 minutes
- Educate children on the importance of not sharing hats, hair-bows, jackets and gloves
- Check your children frequently for head lice, it’s much easier to get rid of if you discover it at an early stage
OMG, on the peppermint one, didn’t know. Maybe that is why Viv hasn’t gotten lice, she eats peppermint rather often. Thanks for the tips!
My coolmom player guest today is Jo McGinley. She and I are not only old friends, but she was in the improv group I co-founded. We did a lot of improv together. If you were in San Francisco in the 90s, I’m sure you knew of Scratch Theatre!
Well, here we scratch some lice.
I dread getting the call as well. I really don’t know what to look for
Rosemary oil is another great lice repellent. We’ve had GREAT luck preventing Lice with Fairy Tales’ Rosemary Repel products! It’s an organic line and Jason has never gotten lice and we’ve been through several outbreaks in his classrooms over the years.
On days he’s not just had a shampoo I rub a bit of conditioner through his hair and we’re good to go. The shampoo is gentle, smells great and leaves his hair soft too;-)
Best DIY if you or the little one gets lice.
Canola oil! you cover every family members head with the stuff (making sure to fully get down to the roots) and put on a plastic hair cap.
Leave on hair for a few hours (to suffocate all the lice) best done with a board game or other distraction of family fun to help time fly!
When done and with fresh washed hair comb through to find the eggs that are left behind.
This may take 2 times if eggs are left to hatch also make sure all bedding is washed in hot water or replaced entirely.
Love your friend…I bet you have a wonderful time together…lucky you.
Tea tree oil. And HOURS of picking out the nits.
Your friend is a hoot as are you
