Momversation Autism Debate

Well, this report hit the mommy world. At Momversation.com I was asked to load up my response along with Mindy and Heather Spohr. When the report first appeared in The Lancet linking the MMR vaccine to Autism, it was a big deal. Now, The Lancet has taken it back citing lapses in the research and a relationship that the researcher had with a lawyer working with Autism groups that was not previously disclosed. I just heard the head of The Lancet on the radio, and he said that because of this they would not longer publish speculative studies, even if they did help further science one day because they are too public and too prone to hysteria.

Does this retraction change your mind about the link? Or about vaccines in general?

Holly Robinson Peete: A Cool Mom Visit

Well, here is my new favorite. Holly was recently a guest on my TV Guide Network show, “The Fashion Team”. She, of course, used to be on “21 Jump street” and “Hanging with Mr. Cooper.” She and her husband created a charity to help people pay for therapy and such for people with Parkinson’s. She lost her father to the disease. He was the original Gordon on Sesame Street. She also has a son with autism. She speaks openly about this to help kids get diagnosed early and get the proper help. She said her son has benefited from from the therapy and care that they were able to provide, but many families can not afford it. So, even though she has 4 kids, she works on that as well. She was also candid about how families with autistic children have an 80% rate of divorce  (fortunately hers is going fine) and that awareness is especially important in the black community where it’s more taboo to talk about kids with LDs (learning disabilities).

In between dishing on the red carpet for the show, we had some good mommy chats. She is such a nice person. We talked everything from how to walk a red carpet (she says, she yells at her husband, “Don’t talk!  They will get your mouth in a weird position, and if we ever break up ,they will use it as picture to make it look like we were arguing.” So true.) to Madoff. Since she runs a charity she was so upset by the foundations that have been vanquished by the dirtbags.

So, I had my video camera on me… but it wasn’t working well. I managed to get part of a quick chat with her about finding some “me” time before they puled the lights and broke down the set.

Jenny McCarthy

Doesn’t Jenny McCarthy look like she would smell good? I didn’t sniff when I met her last weekend, but she was as warm and charming and fun as one would expect. I did a quick interview with her for the Fashion Team. The occasion was the opening of Neiman Marcus – a new, swanky branch of the Westfield mall in Canoga Park (in the San Fernando Valley), an area of LA not known for its chic shops; they are trying to throw down with the OC and Beverly Hills. Jenny was hosting the fashion show, and I was tapped to be a judge. The contestants were real shoppers who entered themselves.

Jenny has been out front with her struggles of having an autistic son. She believes a vaccine he got caused it, and she says he is better now, due to a special diet and play therapy. I can’t weigh in on that, but I do give her a lot of praise for her candor, which I think helps parents who have a child with special needs. She told me that when her son was really bad off, she didn’t brush her teeth for 4 months. And I thought skipping showers was rough!

On a lighter note, she also said she is growing out the adorable short ‘do she has had the last couple of years. Since I am “struggling” with my own short-hair issues, I was all ears. Jenny said, “If it’s not blown out right, I look like Bonnie Hunt.” To which I said, “If my hair isn’t blown out right, I look like Dorothy Hamill.”
